What FileZilla does

FileZilla is a client for the File Transfer Protocol. You enter the address of a server, a user name and a password, and the window splits into two panes: the folders on your own disk on one side and the files on the server on the other. Dragging a file from one pane to the other uploads or downloads it, and a queue at the bottom shows what is still waiting, what has finished and what failed. Saved connections live in the Site Manager, so you do not have to retype server details every time. That workflow makes it a common choice for people who update websites by hand, move backups to a hosting account or swap large files with a colleague who runs a server. The project has been around since 2001 and keeps a steady release rhythm: several 3.70 updates came out between April and June 2026 before 3.71.0 arrived in August.

System requirements

  • Windows 8 or above.
  • Not supported any more: Windows 9x, ME, 2000, XP, Vista and 7. The project strongly recommends upgrading the operating system if you are still on one of them.
  • FileZilla Server is a separate product; it is available only for Windows and needs Windows Vista or above.

How to install

  1. Open the official site filezilla-project.org and choose the FileZilla Client for Windows. Installation notes are on the project wiki.
  2. Run the installer and read every screen; decline any optional offers you did not ask for.
  3. Launch FileZilla, open the Site Manager and add your server with the protocol your host recommends.
  4. Before you upgrade an existing copy, check the changelog for changes that matter to you.

Is FileZilla safe?

The program itself is open source and widely used. Risks come from two places: copies taken from random download sites and saved passwords. Get the installer only from the official site, and if your server supports encrypted connections, use them instead of plain FTP. Protect saved credentials with a master password in the settings.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: free, with no time limit or feature lock.
  • Pro: clear two-pane layout and a visible transfer queue.
  • Pro: available on Windows, macOS and Linux with the same interface.
  • Con: the installer may include optional offers that need unticking.
  • Con: older Windows systems are no longer supported.

Alternatives

From the same category in our listings: WinSCP, another file transfer client for Windows; MobaXterm, a terminal with built-in file transfer; and FileZilla Server if you need to host files rather than fetch them.
